  9.              NOTES ON USING THE GAZETTEER TABLE

  12. The gazetteer table is formatted so that it may be read directly
  13. into many data management systems on various host computers.  All 
  14. fields (columns) are separated by commas, and character fields are 
  15. enclosed in quotes.  Each record consists of 480 bytes, with a
  16. carriage return/line feed sequence in bytes 479 and 480.  This allows
  17. the table to be treated as a fixed length record file on hosts which
  18. support this file type and as a normal text file on other hosts.

  20. The structure and content of the gazetteer table are described in
  21. file GAZETTER.TXT located in the GAZETTER directory.  A label coded in
  22. the Object Description Language (ODL), providing a formal description
  23. of the index table structure, is located in file GAZETTER.LBL.

  25. For personal computer users a DBASE DBF structure is also provided
  26. in the file GAZETTER.DBF.  This file should be copied to magnetic disk
  27. and can then be used to load the GAZETTER.TAB file into DBASE III or
  28. IV with the following commands (assuming the MDIM CD-ROM is loaded
  29. in drive L:):

  34. Once the table is loaded into DBASE, it can generally be automatically
  35. loaded into other data managers or spreadsheets which provide search
  36. and retrieval capabilities.
